Kukui Nut Face Oil — The Hawaiian Face Serum Tradition

By Veronica Gella, Licensed Aesthetician · Waiʻanae, Oʻahu · Updated Feb 2026

Long before "facial oils" were bottled and shelved in Manhattan department stores, Native Hawaiians were using kukui nut oil for exactly what modern skincare is trying to recreate: soft, resilient, luminous skin. Kukui — the candlenut tree — is Hawaiʻi's state tree for a reason. Its oil was so central to island beauty and healing traditions that it was pressed by hand, gifted, and considered sacred. This is a modern guide to using kukui nut oil the way it was meant to be used: as a face serum.

Why kukui nut oil is a legitimate face oil, not a trend

A face oil has to do three things: sink in, feed the skin, and not clog. Kukui nut oil does all three because of its fatty-acid profile:

Fatty acidApproximate %Skin benefit
Linoleic acid (omega-6)~42%Supports skin barrier; low-comedogenic; often deficient in acne-prone skin
Alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3)~29%Anti-inflammatory; helps calm redness
Oleic acid (omega-9)~20%Softness & suppleness; boosts absorption
Other (palmitic, stearic)~9%Structural support

A high-linoleic oil like kukui absorbs cleanly without a heavy residue. Combined with kukui's traditional use on sun-exposed skin, wound healing, and even pre-natal belly care, it's one of the most underrated facial oils in the world.

Is kukui nut oil comedogenic?

Kukui nut oil is generally rated at a comedogenic score of about 2 out of 5 — considered low-to-moderate. Most skin types tolerate it well, including combination and mildly oily skin. If you have very oily, actively-breaking-out, or fungal-acne-prone skin, always do a 24-hour patch test on the inner forearm or jawline first. Our Ka Lā 'Alohi combines kukui with coconut oil (comedogenic ~4), so the same patch-test caveat applies.

How to use Ka Lā 'Alohi as a face serum

  1. Cleanse. Splash with warm water or use your favorite gentle cleanser.
  2. Damp skin. Pat skin about 80% dry — a little moisture helps the oil spread.
  3. Warm 2–3 drops in your palms.
  4. Press, don't rub. Press into cheeks, forehead, and neck. Move outward.
  5. Finish. Follow with SPF in the AM or a light moisturizer at night.

How Ka Lā 'Alohi compares to argan, jojoba, and squalane face oils

OilBest forFeelTypical price
Ka Lā 'Alohi (kukui + coconut + vit E + mica)Balanced hydration + glow, Hawaiian-tradition optionSilky, luminous with light shimmer$30 / 100ml
Argan oilDry, mature skinNourishing, heavier$40–80 / 30ml
Jojoba oilOily / acne-prone skinLight, "sebum-like"$18–30 / 30ml
SqualaneSensitive, minimal-scent routinesUltra-light, dry-touch$25–45 / 30ml

Kukui sits between argan and jojoba on the "feel" spectrum — richer than pure squalane, cleaner than most argan blends, and unlike straight jojoba it delivers a Hawaiian mica shimmer. At $30 for 100ml, Ka Lā 'Alohi is priced roughly a third of comparable-quality argan face oils.
